Pond Construction FAQ

Soil type, subsurface conditions and pond design all matter. A contractor may recommend test holes or other evaluation before construction, especially where clay content is uncertain.

The answer depends on available watershed, intended use, site geometry and budget. It is often better to choose a size the site can reliably support than to begin with an arbitrary acreage target.

Some material may be used in the dam or spread elsewhere on the property. Excess material can be shaped into berms, pads or other improvements if suitable, or hauled if necessary.

Requirements depend on location, water source, dam characteristics and whether streams, wetlands, floodplains or regulated water are affected. Confirm applicable local, state and federal requirements for your specific site before construction.
